Health Care for all the Family

At Prospect Health Centre we provide advice, information and treatment on health and illness for all the family, in a professional and caring manner.

Acute Illness Diagnosis and Treatment

Managing an acute illness requires prompt assessment in a professional manner. In order to facilitate this we offer emergency and same day appointments for urgent medical problems. It is of utmost importance to us that views of patients and carers are taken into consideration when developing a treatment plan.

Blood Tests

Blood tests are carried out by our nurse Barbara or by your doctor during your consultation. The samples are then sent by courier to the labs at UCHG. We then download your results from a secure hospital website directly to your patient file. Results of blood investigations are available from our nurse between the hours of 2-3pm Monday – Wednesday afternoons. Blood tests are important investigations in the management of conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease and high cholesterol.

Heart Health

The risk of heart disease can be reduced for most people. It is very beneficial to assess risk factors for Cardio-vascular disease. Early detection signs such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure can be diagnosed through regular screening and can reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks in both women and men.

24 Hour Blood Pressure monitoring is offered at the surgery. Your first visit is with our Nurse Barbara to fit the blood pressure monitor and explain the procedure. Your second visit, approximately 24 hours later will be with your Doctor where he/she will read the results of the recording and discuss a treatment plan.

An ECG is a tracing of the Electrical Activity in the heart. This important test may be performed in the course of routine care or as an emergency.

Mental Health Care

As Mental Health problems are one of the most common ailments to afflict our society it is now more important than ever to increase our awareness of positive mental health. Early detection of chronic diseases such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes or arthritis is very important in the control and management of the disease. At Prospect Health Centre we endeavour to assist our patients in understanding their condition and living successfully with it. Our aim is to provide a patient centred approach in managing your chronic disease.

Respiratory Illnesses including Asthma and Pulmonary Disease

Asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Common symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath and can affect all age groups from young to old. We offer a customised plan for proactively monitoring and managing your symptoms.

COPD – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the occurrence of chronic bronchitis or disease of the lungs in which the airways narrow over time. This limits airflow to and from the lungs causing shortness of breath. Important management strategies include: smoking cessation; flu and pneumonia vaccinations; rehabilitation and drug therapy (often using inhalers).

Emphysema is a long term lung disease most often caused by tobacco smoking and long term exposure to air pollution. Emphysema is an irreversible degenerative condition. It is recommended that people who think they may have the disease seek medical attention as soon as possible. Medical advice is essential in optimising the patient’s quality of life and will teach the patient how to actively manage his or her care.

BMI & Lifestyle Screening

Body mass index helps to determine if you are a healthy weight for your height. The World Health Organisation regards a BMI of less than 18.5 as underweight which may indicate malnutrition, an eating disorder or other health problems. While a BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight and above 30 is considered obese. Overweight and obese individuals are at increased risk of many diseases and health conditions including the following:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis
